Blue Lakes lie 17 kilometres to the south-west of
Yelizovo City. Blue Lakes is the name of the lake system located 600-m
high above sea level in a picturesque glacial hollow of the extinct
volcano. The starting point of the route is skiing center “Mountain
Moroznaya”. The Lakes are flooded by the brooks and melting snow of the
hollow. The place has got its name due to the visual phenomenon which
becomes apparent when we watch the sun shedding light on the bottom of
the lakes. The bottom ice reflects the sunlight so that the water seems
to be either bright-blue or violet depending on lighting and the
quantity of the bottom ice.
The Lakes are located at different
altitudes and they are joined by the brook which flows out of the
hollow and gives the source for the Polovinka River. There is a great
variety of alpine and subalpine flowers along the track in June and
July. You can see pink and white rhododendrons, Kamchatka lily, lady’s
slippers and other flowers. Long-tailed gopher, black-capped marmot and
ground squirrels can be seen in the immediate vicinity of the
lacustrine hollow. The brook flows from the lake down the precipice
forming the cascades of waterfalls.
